Hare and Hound and EnduroX

Win # 5

I am a little behind on my blog but I am currently sitting at my office waiting on Fed Ex to deliver something I need for my race this weekend.   How many of you have had the same problem…all ready to head out except you are praying Fed Ex comes in time so you can get the part you so desperately need.  For me it is a quick fill gas can.   I have been using cheap ones and those kind enough to help me continue to give me grief about it.   Hopefully I will arrive to Round 6 of the NH&H with a new KTM quick fill can!  Thank you Competition Cycle

I have been a little lazy with my blog and did not report on my last 2 races so let’s do the quick version.   EnduroX was okay and I made the night event but I sucked in the night event and did not do as well as I believe I am capable of doing.  Will be working on this more so I can be ready for the next round on June 9th.  Enough said!

The NH&H was good however I was riding really slow on the first loop after competing all day in Vegas the day before and then having Ben drive me all night to Utah in time to race the next morning.  Loop one was mostly in the sand dunes which I SUCK at.  I also began to slow way down after passing so many injured riders.   I got passed around mile 35 by another female competitor so I realized I better get over it and speed up.  Loops 2 is typically in the trees and I feel much better in this terrain.   I came out with another win making this win #5 of 5.

Oh look there FED Ex just showed up!   I am out of here!   I will report on my race this weekend as soon as I can.

Vegas to Utah

Vegas 2011

Looking forward to this weekend of racing!   While I know it will be fun it is also going to kick my butt!  Tomorrow my husband and I head to Vegas for Round # 1 of the EnduroCross season.   Friday will start early with a riders meeting at 8:15 and then practices or qualifying heats about every hour.   The final race for women will be at 10:10 that night.

Immediately following the race Ben and I will load up and head to Jericho Utah for round 5 of the NH&H series.  Fortunately the banner drops on this race at 11:30 so we have a little time to sleep.  After this race we plan to drive 5 hours to Monitcello, Utah for a Webe race.   Not sure who will be more tired, Ben or myself?   I think Ben will because it is more work doing all the prep than racing and I am thankful for him being there.

You will see me on my Stillwell Performance, KTM of Aspen KTM 200 XCW in Vegas and my KTM 350 XC-F in Utah.

Stay tuned for results!

Look for my 1008 number in Vegas. Not pronounced one thousand and eight but rather ten o eight!

Bookcliff Rattler’s Team Race

10:08 girls and a boy

Wheeeee!

I love the Geico commercial with the pig zipping down the zip line with the pin wheel yelling Wheeeee!   I found some mini pin wheels and decided to buy them and wear them on our helmets this weekend at a team race in Grand Junction.

Our team was called “10:08 girls and a boy”.   Mandy and I teamed up and then invited my brother to race since he is my website master and since he is so skinny and light he would not damage my suspension. Ha!  They require you to ride one bike which was a little tricky since one of us is 5-2” tall, one 5-8” and another 6-3”.   We settled on my bike because it has electric start and then Mandy could push the button to start it and not worry that she can’t reach the ground.

I rode lap # 1 and then handed off to Mandy followed by Chris.   After Mandy’s first lap she said “that bike is crazy fast and I am going to kill myself…I better not do any more laps!”   Chris then comes in and is complaining he has the worst case of arm pump….let me guess bike is too powerful??   My team was falling apart but after a little coxing I got Mandy back on the bike and she had a good second lap.  It takes a little getting used to the power, maybe I should have let them take a spin on the bike before jumping on and going for it.

Chris had to race the next day so I gave him a break and rode a third lap.   He would have done it but it was better we let him save himself for the race the following day.  We ended up getting 4thout of 12 teams in the B class.  Just missed getting a trophy but we had a fun!

Christopher, Christopher and Nicole

Funny story from the race…I often give Mandy some of my ISDE Moose Race outfits since they give me 6 outfits for the event.  Of course they have my name on the back of the jersey but hey she can’t turn down a free outfit.  This in return confuses some people because my name is on her back.  During one of Mandy’s laps she was duking it out with another guy and they were back and forth until he crashed and she got around him for good.  While I was out racing the last lap he came up to Mandy and said “that was fun battling you out there.  Are you going to race the ISDE again this year?”   Then she told him she Mandy and Nicole was out racing the last lap.

Mandy, Mandi or Mandy???

Mandi Mastin- Racing 10:08 bike # 2

Am I talking about Mandy, Mandi or Mandy??  Ironically I have 3 VERY close friends named Amanda (AKA Mandy) and 2 of them I race with so I thought I would let everyone know the difference.  Mandi Mastin is my friend from Ohio who I met in 2001 when we raced our first ISDE together in France.   When I am talking about her you will notice her name is spelled with and “I” while my other 2 friends are spelled with a “y”.

Mandy Flaming- College roommate

This takes care of one Mandi but now we need to talk about my other 2 friends named Mandy.  Mandy Flaming is a college roommate from Oklahoma but has relatives who live in the same small town in Colorado as me.  We met at college and had no idea there was a connection to Colorado until one day I was running and I heard someone yell out “Nicole what are you doing here?”   It was Mandy visiting her great grandmother during spring break.   She still returns nearly every year to visit Ben and I for a week.

Now it gets even more confusing…Mandy from Oklahoma is actually an Amanda Dianne born in 1973 and turns out my best friend Mandy Evans is also an Amanda Diane born in 1973!   Notice that one has 2 “n’s” in Dianne and the other has only one!  Crazy!

If you see me racing National Hare and Hounds and talking about Mandy it is my best friend from Gypsum.  If you hear me talking about Mandi and racing ISDE’s then it is Mandi.  Clear as mud now?  Mandy from Oklahoma does not ride motorcycles so for the most part she is out of the picture when it comes to my blogs.

Mandy Evans

This weekend will be pretty cool for Team 10:08 Racing.  Mandy and I plan to do a team race tomorrow in Grand Junction on my KTM 350 10:08 bike while Mandi will be racing my other KTM 350 10:08 bike at round # 3 of the GNCC in South Carolina.  She has not gotten her new bikes yet so I told her to race mine again!   Should be a fun weekend for all!  Stay tuned for race results!

Nothing like friendly competition….

Meg, Mandy and Nicole before race

This blog is for my friend and teammate Mandy Evans…and for Meg Blackburn.

My husband is not too fond of traveling so he has always appreciated that my best friend will make the long drives with me to follow my passion for racing.  Mandy also has a love and passion for motorcycles but her parents only let her go to the dealerships and sit on the new bikes when she was little whereas my dad bought me one when I was 4.  Soon it became her mission to own a motorcycle before she turned 30 and now 7 years later she is enjoying every minute of it and racing whenever she can.

At the National Hare and Hounds she races the Women’s C class so she can be finished before me.  One of her competitors happens to be Meg Blackburn a journalist for vurboffroad.com.  I don’t know how long Meg has been riding but I know this is her first year racing the NH&H series and like Mandy she is determined to get better and faster at each race and of course win.  Round 1 Mandy got the first place finish with Meg in second….just about 20 minutes behind.   Round 2 Mandy would again get first place and Meg in second…just about 20 minutes behind.  As Meg laughs and tells it “at least I am consistent.”

At round 2 we all met before hand and joked about them racing and how Meg was determined to go for the win and not be 20 minutes behind.  Of course Mandy is competitive and loves the challenge so she too was ready!

I start before them so I said goodbye and good luck and was on my way.  At the end of the race I asked Mandy how she did and she told me she got the win!  The sad news is Meg got to the start and had forgotten to put her score card on the fender of her bike.  At all the past races there was over 15 minutes between the Pro start and the C start so she raced back to the pits and was scrambling to get the score carded taped to her fender.  I laugh because all of us reading this have probably been in Meg’s shoes forgetting something important behind that we need just before the start.   Mandy was at the line wondering where she was and if she would make it back in time.  At this point Mandy considered waiting as to make the race fair but last minute decided it was time to take off.   Not sure how far behind Meg was but she actually got close enough to spot Mandy on the course behind another lady rider so she was motivated to try and catch her.   The adrenaline from forgetting her card and rushing back probably helped her go fast…oh and I have to imagine there is not too much dust when you are the only person racing down the bomb run. J  Eventually Mandy got around the other rider and was able to ride to the win with Meg second ….just 15 minutes behind.

It will be fun to get to the next one and see if we can have another good battle from these 2 ladies!

Loving the “Desert” of Idaho

Loving the “Desert” of Idaho!

I headed to Round 3 of the National Hare and Hound on Friday night in the “Sportsmobile” with my friend Mandy.  It was refreshing making a turn and heading north this time rather than a straight shot west.  On Saturday Mandy spotted the Bruneau Dunes State Park about an hour from the race sight and suckered me into pulling over and climbing to the top of them, see photo!   We made it to the top only to get sand blasted when a gust of wind came up but we still had fun!

What a work out!

The race sight was quiet because the club had a signing with the Pro’s on Saturday in Nampa and not many people had arrived yet.   After my adventure to the top of the dunes I was a little tired and decided to hang in the van and watch a movie rather than walk the bomb run.  The movie was the Descendants…not good!  Generally we like to paint or nails the night before we race because we are girls and this is what we do but time got away from us.

Sunday morning we signed up visited with some friends and then got ready to race.  This would be the first time on my bike since crashing into a tree in Florida and injuring my thumb.  I decided to wear a thumb brace for protection over the top of my glove but was unsure if it would work or not.  Of course all it did was cut the circulation off my thumb and part of my hand so I pulled it off and got back to racing.  I was definitely hesitant to push it hard and since I am currently leading the series and I felt it was best to stay close to Shayla and not worry too much about winning but finishing.   I started behind her on the bomb and then followed her for about the first 25 miles until she went wide on a turn to let me by.   I went around her and she followed in hot pursuit.

At the first gas Michael Garvin and Shayla’s dad graciously pitted for me with my sorry one gallon gas can from Walmart and I was on my way.   When I got to the end of loop 1 they scanned my helmet and in typical fashion I tipped over in front of everyone watching.  Embarrassing for sure but I am thankful for slow speed crashes any day over the high speed ones.   At Gas Anthony DiBasilio, Caselli’s mechanic pitted for me as well as a member of the JCR crew with my sorry super slow fill gas can.   I swear most everyone at motorcycle races are so nice and helpful!

Loop 2 was a killer and took my breath away.   When I say killer I mean great trails with breath taking views!   There was a section where we came up over a hill and looked down on a valley with some tall rocks that pointed towards the heavens.  I wanted to take in the view but the trail was on the side of a hill and falling off the trail would have been bad news so I kept my eyes on the course.  The river crossing was refreshing and the course remained fun!  Near the end we went down a “waterfall” type gully with some deep pools of water at the bottom.  Of course you can’t see below the water and all the spectators are looking for some excitement so best not to ask them where to go.   As I dropped into the second pool I quickly realized it was pretty deep and then I somehow gave the bike a little too much throttle and almost looped the bike which would have buried it and me in the water.  Let’s say I was LUCKY and saved it and was able to cruise into the finish with wet boots!

After bad performance at the GNCC in Florida I was happy to return to the desert and come away with another win!  We have a few weeks before the next round so I will try to give my thumb a rest and get back to 100%.  See you then!

GNCC part success part failure

Failure is when you make too many mistakes which does not result in wins.   I got a bad start and then passed a few girls heading into the second turn and another girl plowed right into the side of me taking us both down.   After untangling myself from her and the bike I got up and headed out.  By lap 2 I had moved from about last place to 5th place and was feeling pretty good until I hit a tree root and went head on into a tree.   I broke my front fender and jammed my thumb really hard.   I was able to continue but not able to push…finishing 8th out of 22. (Lot of girls down South)

Round 2 my thumb was still swollen and my friend Mandi Mastin who used to be the GNCC champion was without a running bike so I told her to race mine.  She has been riding Husky for the last 2 years so it took a lot of convincing from a lot of folks to get her to ride a KTM and not throw away another race.  The night before we put her bars and a lower seat on the bike and she drove it to the start the next morning ready to race.

Mandi ready to race my KTM 350

It was fun being at the start and watching people walk by Mandi and then stopping and looking back realizing it was her on a KTM.   I was happy I had the opportunity to help out a great person.  At the start she was 3rd off the line out of the 17 girls.  Lap one she was in 4th right behind the other girls.  Lap 2 she was dropping back and found herself in 7th.  She said she had some arm pump.  Maybe the 350 was too much bike???  Lap 3 she was back to 4th place and closing in on Sarah Whitmore.   Lap 4 was the most exciting and she had the fastest lap of all the women, 11 seconds faster than Factory KTM rider Maria Forsberg.   She was now in 3rd and 5 seconds behind 2nd place.

With one lap left we thought she could pull out a 2nd place on my bike.   Unfortunately she got stuck in a mud hole and was passed back by the other 3 riders finishing in 5th place.   After having 3 races this year go to the dumps for her it was cool to see how fast she really is and she was racing a bike she had never ridden.   Congrats to my friend.

I am now working on getting my thumb healed.  Swelling is going down.  I leave today for Round # 3 of the NH&H.  Report to follow!

Thanks to the following sponsors and people for making my trip possible:  Dave and Mandi, Guttish’s, Stillwell Performance, Moose Racing, KTM of Aspen, ReKluse, FMF, Sidi, Tim Anderson for straightening the things I bent and my husband for everything he does!

Tree won this one!

GNCC Bound

ISDE 2007 Chile

Here is the simple but powerful rule… always give people more than they expect to get.

This quote is very fitting of Mandi Mastin.  Mandi and I have been friends since 2001 and while we seldom see each other, generally once a year at the ISDE, Mandi has always been a giving and helpful friend.  I called her a few months ago and asked if she would help me get a bike to Florida and Georgia so I could race a few rounds of the GNCC.  Without hesitation she quickly made arrangements for me and my bike to be there.   To me this is the character trait of a true athlete.  She will be sure my bike is ready and that I am at the start of the race but after that game on…she will be ready to compete and or kick my butt!!!

I also have to thank Bo Bobbitt for letting me ship my bike to his shop in Georgia and for having someone set it up.  Are all people in the motorcycle world great or what??

Must always thank my husband for getting my bike ready to ship from Colorado to Florida.  He also took a day off from Snowmobiling to ride with me on Sunday.  We rode until blood blisters were the size of dimes on his hands.  Love you honey and while I am gone have the best time snowmobiling.

Look forward to to the racing and praying the 85 degree temperature is not going to kill this Colorado girl.

Win # 2 at Round # 2 National Hare and Hound

Had another great race at round # 2 of the NH&H this past weekend bringing home my second win.    My friend Mandy and I arrived to the race site on Saturday around 2:00 and were able to actually get out of the van sign up, walk the bomb run and enjoy visiting with other racers because the wind was much calmer.   With the bikes ready all we had to do was paint our fingernails, eat dinner and get a good nights rest.

We woke the follow morning and headed to do our practice ride of the bomb run.  It is so hard for me determine the best place to line up and I figure there is no way I am beating all the pro’s and experts off the line so I pick a place and go with it.  I still have not figured out how to have the courage to pin it while eating dust and after watching the scary video from the WORCS race I choose to ride like a girl!

About 5 miles into loop # 1 I saw Shayla so I stayed behind her for a bit and then passed her.  It was less stressful knowing she was behind me so I didn’t have to play hound and try to ride like mad thinking she was ahead of me.   Before gas she made a good pass on me and we came into gas at the same time.   My volunteer pit crew the Garvin family was awesome to fill my bike, give me new goggles and a quick snack.  Shayla pulled out first and I followed.

We were told loop 2 would be much harder and technical and I was looking forward to it.  Loop 1 was fast and easy which is not my specialty.  They were right loop 2 would prove to be much more technical with steep up and downhills and a lot of rocks.  Shayla had difficulty getting around a slower rider who caused her to make a little mistake and go down.  I decided at that point it was time to move to the front and punch it!  I rode hard and fast and was able to put in a pretty good time for loop 2 coming to finish line first for the Women’s class!   This race I have to give the most credit to my ReKluse sponsor…..I simply could not live without it!  All my sponsors are awesome and I am thankful for you all.

Mandy put in another good ride and won the women’s C class.  She would prefer the longer more challenging course but this one was really hard so she made a good call!   At the end of the race the 2 guys camped next to us, Donn and Larry complimented us on our race.  Mandy beat Donn by 1 minute and I beat Larry by 20 minutes.  They decided next race they should maybe consider painted their nails for good luck…LOL!

As always a BIG thanks to my awesome husband for always having everything PERFECT to make my racing easier!   Happy Valentine’s Day Ben…I LOVE YOU!  Sorry we too no pictures
